ChildHaus is a halfway home welcoming displaced kids with cancer or other serious illness.
I have taken part in ChildHaus for two years where students from our school get the chance to visit the children and understand their needs.
This year, due to the pandemic however, we didn't have an opportunity to run our annual fund raiser.
Last month, we were brainstorming potential fundraiser ideas, and one my group suggested was to host an online Counter-Strike tournament to raise funds. This was quite a creative idea in my opinion, as it would not only create a community event where we could have fun and meet others, but also raise funding for future projects. However, we did consider the cultural context of the game, as it involves killing people and role-playing as terrorists, something that may cause ethical issues when raising money for charity, but ultimately we decided to push through with the proposal as we felt this impact would be negligible and outweighed by the common knowledge among the community of how to play the game. A more important concern was the primarily male audience the game targeted, meaning we would miss out on contributions from half of the community. To address this, we offered to run multiple fundraisers at the same time, some of them with other themes that would be more targeted to a female audience. Ultimately, while we were unable to run the fundraiser due to other reasons, I still think the proposal was a success and a potential idea to use in the future.
